Launcher Puts Your Favorite Apps and Contacts In Notification Center

iOS: iOS 8's new widgets and extensions are a great way to spruce up your Notification Center. Launcher takes advantage of the new feature in iOS 8 and gives you a speed dial to your apps and contacts right in the Notification Center.

With Launcher, you can set up app shortcuts, contact shortcuts, and even specific app commands like "Go Home" in Apple Maps that appear in Notification Center. Once you get everything in order, just pull down Notification Center and all your shortcuts are right there. It's handy if you use a handful of apps more than others or if you just want a quick way to message someone.

New RPG Is A Love Letter To Fallout, XCOM & FTL

It's called Bedlam, and it's a post-apocalyptic RPG with Fallout's ramshackle vibe, XCOM-style gameplay, and gorgeously detailed animated art. There's also permadeath, marauders, mutants, and cyborgs. I like all of those things!

How To Check If Your Mac or Linux Machine Is Vulnerable to Shellshock

How To Check If Your Mac or Linux Machine Is Vulnerable to Shellshock

Shellshock, the newly discovered vulnerability that allows attackers to inject code into your machine, puts your Mac or Linux at a serious risk for malicious attacks. Here's how to test if your machine is vulnerable.

Shellshock uses a bash script to access your computer. From there, they can launch programs, enable features, and access files. The script only affects UNIX-based systems, so Linux and Mac are the only ones vulnerable.

You can test your system by running this test command from Terminal:

env x='() { :;}; echo vulnerable' bash -c 'echo hello'

If you're not vulnerable, you'll get this result:

bash: warning: x: ignoring function definition attempt bash: error importing function definition for `x' hello

If you are vulnerable, you'll get:

vulnerable hello

You can also check the version of bash you're running by entering:

bash --version

If you get version 3.2.51(1)-release as a result, you'll need to update. Many Linux distributions already have patches available, so you can follow these instructions to update your system. Mac users are still waiting for a patch, but you can update bash manually using this guide.

5 Dishes That Are Better with Cocktail Bitters — Tips from The Kitchn

If you make cocktails at home, you know that a good bottle of bitters is one of the essentials to have on hand. Bitters are a concentrated mixture of alcohol, herbs, aromatics and spices — maybe you've heard of Peychaud's or Angostura?

The herbal notes that bitters bring to the table help to round out the flavors of many cocktails, and I even use a little in my seltzer water in the afternoon as a pick-me-up. Bitters are seldom used in cooking or baking though, but many chefs and home cooks think it's high time this changed!

Futures End: Booster Gold

The Good

Booster Gold is back! I don't know what it is about this character, but if he's in a comic book, I'm going to pick it up. As soon as I found out Dan Jurgens was writing this, I got even more excited. His work on the pre-52 BOOSTER GOLD series has this swell place in my heart. Here, however, Booster Gold is a bit more serious and less fun, which is fine. It's unexpected, but at the same time, is a fresh look on the character and how he fits into the New 52.

What is wonderful about this issue is that it matters. Many times, these Futures End books give us a glimpse into what we could expect these characters to end up like. In FUTURES END: BOOSTER GOLD, the events and ideas presented here lead to something bigger and something even more complex. The events that take place here will be leading into FUTURES END and the upcoming WORLDS END, the newest weekly series. I love that this brings all that together and more than anything, I love that this gives fans something to be excited about for this upcoming new weekly.

While I tend to despise multiple artists on a book, it makes sense for this issue. Right off the bat, the book opens up with Moritat, which is a nice connection between this book and ALL-STAR WESTERN, where we last saw Booster. There are six artists on this book but because the issue jumps between worlds, it really does work. I also really liked seeing Jurgens do some art on this issue as well. Booster combined with Jurgens makes me feel right at home.

I spent a lot of time just looking around the panels for things I recognized, which was a good and bad part of this book. I LOVED seeing Ted Kord very briefly in action, but more than anything, I got strangely excited for Kamandi. I had a feeling we'd be seeing him because of the cover and while it was brief, there's a lot of small moments in this issue that will put smiles on long-time DC readers' faces.

The Bad

Yep, this issue is a solid pile of confusing, but in a sense, that's the point. However, the overall idea of what this book is trying to say doesn't really become clear until the final pages. Most of the time, this issue becomes "look who is in the background" for the reader. It's a middle-ground moment, but it's shades more exciting that a lot of these Futures End month books.

The Verdict

It's great to see Booster Gold back in action! There were a few times where the overall issue was a tad confusing, but it's a character travelling across multiple dimensions, so it's bound to be a bit out there. Dan Jurgens needs to be writing and maybe even drawing a Booster Gold on-going, as long as it's as fun as this little adventure was. There's a ton of the FUTURES END books to choose from, but this was one of my favorites.

New iPhone owners: Do not update to iOS 8.0.1 yet. Joan Rivers iPhone 6 product placement goes out to social media weeks after the comedian dies

9to5Mac Joan Rivers iPhone 6 product placement goes out to social media weeks after the comedian dies

joan-rivers-iphone-6

Apparently whoever runs Instagram and Facebook feeds for the recently deceased Joan Rivers forgot to unschedule social media posts promoting the iPhone 6- that one that was just released today, weeks after Rivers died on September 4th. The message below, which we can only speculate might have been the result of Apple's efforts to get the device in the hands of celebrities, appeared on Instagram and Facebook accounts for Rivers before being promptly removed earlier today (via BusinessInsider):

"This badass is being replaced by an iPhone 6 (not the fat one). I got this one in 2010 and, after 4 years, my only complaint is that apps are now designed for bigger screens, and the battery is getting tired. Never had a case for it, since it was most beautiful on its own. Great achievement in design. Great product. #apple #iPhone #tech."

It wouldn't be the first time we've seen celebrities giving Apple some exposure during product launches. Stephen Colbert, for example, often shows off Apple products before they are event released to the public including this year with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus on last night's show ahead of today's launch.
