This Table Gives Food Substitutes for Just About Any Ingredient

This Table Gives Food Substitutes for Just About Any Ingredient

You won’t always have every ingredient you need. RecipeTips helps you avoid a trip to the store with a giant table of almost every common food item, and its best substitute.

Much like golden ratios can free you up in recipes, knowing some handy substitutes can let you try recipes you otherwise wouldn’t, too. For example, if a recipe calls for coconut milk, you can usually substitute it with whole milk or a mixture of cream of coconut and water. But if you didn’t know that, you’d just skip that delicious Thai Red Curry recipe and cook something else for dinner.

Apart from covering common ingredients, RecipeTips has also come up with a table for healthy substitutions, like evaporated skim milk instead of cream or turkey frankfurters instead of hot dogs.

To figure out your own alternatives, check out their guide to ingredient functions, which will help you understand what one of the common food items does, so you can make substitutions wisely.

iPad Pro diary: It’s day seven, and decision time …

Having started out with my first impressions a week ago, highlighted my core questions and decided on Monday that the iPad Pro couldn’t replace my iPad Air 2 (only be an additional device), it’s time to make my decision. I think between us at 9to5Mac we’ve been putting the tablet through its paces in a pretty comprehensive fashion! We don’t […]

SNL’s December Musical Guests: Leon Bridges, Chance The Rapper, & Bruce Springsteen

For the most part, Saturday Night Live’s musical guests this season have been pretty solid, even as the show around it crumbles, and it looks like they’ll have a pretty good December as well. SNL just revealed the next few guests via Twitter: Leon Bridges (12/5), Chance The Rapper (12/12), and Bruce Springsteen (12/19). They’ll […]

Nestle Japan Releasing Gold-Leaf Covered Kit-Kat Bars

gold-kit-kat-bar.jpg Because Japan loves Kit-Kat bars almost as much as I love dive bars, Nestle Japan is going to release a limited edition of gold-leaf covered Kit-Kats in January. The 500 bars will be sold exclusively at Nestle's Kit-Kat specialty store Chocolatory (which is a real thing that exists), and cost around $17. That seems a little expensive for a piece of candy, although I've never had a piece of candy covered in gold before. I have had a piece of candy covered in hair though, because I was not about to let that pink Starburst go to waste just because I dropped it at the dog groomer's. Thanks to vishal, who's holding out for a platinum covered Snickers.

Deer Tick – “If I Should Fall From Grace With God” (The Pogues Cover) (Stereogum Premiere)

You don’t really need a reason to partake in spontaneous drinking parties (here’s a drink for getting that raise, here’s another for getting out of bed today…), but Bloodshot Records’ 21st birthday is an especially good reason to down that crate of Blue Moon. To celebrate the record label reaching legal drinking age, they have […]

Firefox Is Finally Available on iOS

Firefox Is Finally Available on iOS

iOS: If your browser of choice is Firefox and you also use an iPhone or iPad, you’ve probably been frustrated by Firefox’s absence from iOS. Today, that frustration has ended.

Firefox has been available for Android users for years, but, as The Verge reports, a dispute between Mozilla and Apple over the use of Apple’s standards kept Mozilla from offering Firefox for iOS. They’ve changed their position, so now you can use Firefox on the go and sync your browsing info and preferences between your desktop and mobile through your Firefox account.

The mobile browser also features private browsing and “intelligent searching” from the omnibar.

apple cider sangria

Apple Cider Sangria Psst, here’s the other reason I rather love having a big pitcher or two of a single, seasonally-perfect, agreeable-to-most cocktail at dinner parties: it saves you a lot of work. Even Better Than The CG!: Mother Makes Ultra-Realistic Rocket Racoon Costume For Son

rocket-racoon-costume-1.jpg This is the Rocket Racoon costume mother Christina Borchardt painstakingly crafted for her son, Chase. It's almost hard to believe there's a kid in there and some mad scientist didn't just splice racoon and human DNA together. I feel like that may have been easier. You can see details of the whole build over at The RPF, where Christina documented the process. Good job, Christina. I tried making a realistic Rocket Racoon costume and everybody laughed at me. "You just glued a bunch of teddy bears to yourself." You are such a hater. *unbuckling belt* "Wait, what are you doing?" What's it look like? I'm about to pee on your shoes. Hit the jump for a couple more shots and a couple videos.
