11 Places to Get Kombucha on Draft Around Philly

Kombucha, the fermented beverage that’s been touted as a probiotic wonder drink, is like Paris Hilton circa 2003: Whether you like it or not (and regardless of whether you think it’s totally gross), it is everywhere. And not just in bottles: We noticed that draft kombucha seemed to be popping up all over town, so…

U.S. Highway Administration orders return to vintage typeface

fonts

In 2004, a more legible typeface, Clearview, was approved to improve America's road signs. But after a decade of use, U.S. Federal Highway Administration has decided to return to the old typeface, publicly available as Highway Gothic.

The reasoning isn't clear—they claim that it's actually more legible than Clearview, but are yet to explain why or offer research to back up the decision. Highway Gothic, designed in the 1940s, has peculiarities held to compromise its legibility. Clearview's letter forms were designed to be visible at greater distances and under less favorable lighting and weather conditions.

“Helen Keller can tell you from the grave that Clearview looks better,” (designer) Meeker says. At the time, the FHWA agreed. In its 2004 approval memo, the agency noted that Clearview boosted highway-sign legibility for drivers traveling at 45 miles per hour by 80 feet of reading distance—or 1.2 seconds of bonus reading time… From the start, Clearview was greeted as a civic, social, and design success. Around 30 states have adopted the font, making it arguably the dominant design paradigm on U.S. roads. Print magazine called it one of the 10 typefaces of the decade in 2010. The Clearview typeface family was the first digital font ever acquired by the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. People behind the font spoke about it with swagger.

One possibility is that Clearview must be licensed on a per-user basis, making it too expensive. Also mentioned is its resemblance to Britain's official signage typeface, Transport.

Why Buying Craft Beer in Big Bottles Probably Isn't a Good Idea Right Now

Why Buying Craft Beer in Big Bottles Probably Isn't a Good Idea Right Now

It’s no secret that when you buy anything you should choose your container based on unit price. Well, as VinePair notes, when it comes to craft beer sold in growlers and bombers, you’ll likely pay more for the bigger bottles than you would if you just bought a six pack.

Part of the rationale here is worth considering though: you spend money on craft beer to support small breweries, and in some cases you get reusable containers that are great for other things (or just holding more beer that you might get a discount on when you refill them), but that all considered, VinePair explains you should still consider the cost per ounce:

As craft beer has become more popular, the romanticism behind the beverage and the packaging that holds it has grown. Showing up with a large bottle of beer now doesn’t seem cheap or hobo-ish, it seems dignified and refined. It is much more acceptable to place a large bottle on the dinner table – just as one would with a bottle of wine – than a bunch of cans or twelve ounce bottles. It’s a look that helps legitimize beer as a beverage just as worthy for pairing with serious cuisine as fine wine.

In addition, large packaging also allows for collectability. Beers in large format containers are viewed as being more special and rare compared to their six-pack brethren, which suggests that there’s a scarcity component to their availability.

All this means that craft beer sellers are now able to sell Bombers that were once sold at prices cheaper per ounce than 6-packs, at prices that are sometimes now double that of a 6-pack’s price per ounce.

They also go on to note that for the most part, many craft beer fans are fine with this—they actually feel like they’re getting their money’s worth, so if that’s you then by all means go for it. On the other hand of course, it’s just as easy to pour a can into a glass (or your mouth) as a bottle, and you’re less likely to have beer slowly going flat or skunky if you pour what you want from smaller containers than growlers you might leave partially empty.

Either way, the bottom line is the same as anything else you buy—per unit pricing is the number you should look at on the shelf, not the overall price, and buy intelligently.

The creator of Papyrus, the world's second-most reviled font, was paid only $2,500 in today's money

John Brownlee interviews Chris Costello, the type designer behind Papyrus, described as "that font comedians move onto when their Comic Sans jokebook gets a little dog-eared."

"There have definitely been days I wish I never sold the rights," he laughs, acknowledging the font definitely has its share of critics. He says he never dreamed Papyrus would end up installed on over a billion computers around the world. If he did, he probably would have asked for more than the equivalent of $2,500 today for it.

Grimes – “Kill V. Maim” Video

We named Grimes’ latest offering, Art Angels, the best album of 2015 because it sounds like an innovative work of mad genius. It’s Claire Boucher’s unique and concise vision — one that could easily soundtrack an as-yet-uninvented video game — that lends itself well to visual interpretation. We already saw the baroque Boucher-directed video for […]
