Chance The Rapper Is Doing Incredible Things

Stereogum Chance The Rapper Is Doing Incredible Things

Chance The RapperYou see plenty of good performances at music festivals, but you don't see too many great ones. I've been going to these things for literal decades, and the list of transcendent music-festival performances that I've seen is a short one: The Prodigy at the 1997 HFStival, Radiohead and a Tribe Called Quest at the 1998 … More »

Stereogum Watch Stephen Colbert & Henry Rollins Sing "Carol Of The Bells"

Stephen Colbert and Henry RollinsWe may, right now, be living through the beginning of Henry Rollins' David Hasselhoff/William Shatner phase -- the phase in which celebrities make a living by professionally making fun of themselves. Rollins spoofed his own legendarily intense persona last night on Stephen Colbert's Late Show. On the show, Colbert and Rollins, both bedecked in lit-up … More »

Date Night Movies Helps Couples Find a Film They Can Both Enjoy

Date Night Movies Helps Couples Find a Film They Can Both Enjoy

Every couple has had to deal with the problem of what movie to watch at least once. You want this one, they want that one, and neither want to budge. Date Night Movies finds peace by picking a third movie that's somewhere in the middle.

The site is very simple to use. You simply pick two movies (one for each of you) and the site will serve up a sampling of movies that may appeal to both tastes. The suggestions are surprisingly good. As in the above example, I picked actual samplings from my own (Avengers) and my girlfriend's (Moon) favorite movie list. Sure enough, both Guardians of the Galaxy and Interstellar are films we both enjoy.

Of course, there may be limits to just how much of a compromise the site can make due the nature of how movies are. For example, pairing Transformers and The Notebook resulted in a suggestion to watch Twilight, which is likely to cause more fights than fewer. Still, if you're struggling to come up with ideas, Date Night has some pretty good ideas.

Boing Boing Watch Prince's burning cover of Radiohead's "Creep"

From Coachella 2008. When fans over the years previously posted this video from Coachella 2008, Prince sent DMCA takedown notices. But when Radiohead's Thom Yorke was asked about the matter, he responded: "Really? He's blocked it? Well, tell him to unblock it. It's our ... song." It was recently uploaded again and now Prince has Tweeted his approval.

Tripdelta Finds Cheaper Flights Through "Secret" Airport Routes

Flying through the major hubs of the big airlines could be making your trips more expensive than they could be. Tripdelta finds the hidden airports that could save you as much as 90% over the standard route.

The site was built by a team of mathematicians who traveled to more than 100 countries to find the best airports to connect you to where you want to go. For example, if you're flying from San Francisco to London, tripdelta finds the cheapest flight will be to go from Oakland to Los Angeles and then from LAX to London (LGW). Kayak simply has you go from SFO, which costs $193 more.

Tripdelta works best now for one-way flights and there might be a convenience costs, with multiple transfers. Still, if you're looking for the absolute cheapest flights, this is a good place to start your search.

Oh Goodness: Video Demonstrating Why No Metal Is Allowed Around MRI Machines

Geekologie - Gadgets, Gizmos, and Awesome Oh Goodness: Video Demonstrating Why No Metal Is Allowed Around MRI Machines

mri-vs-metal-objects.jpg This is a video from 2010 demonstrating why metal objects aren't allowed around MRI machines. The machine in this video has a four tesla magnet that was about to be decommissioned, so they decided to do some experiments first. The picture above is of the machine trying to eat an office chair, and pulling with some 1,800 pounds of force. For reference, I can pull with about six pounds of force and always get picked last in tug-o-war. I get picked second to last in kickball, but only if there's somebody on crutches. Keep going for the video, then close your eyes and imagine Magneto making love to that machine.

This Table Gives Food Substitutes for Just About Any Ingredient

This Table Gives Food Substitutes for Just About Any Ingredient

You won’t always have every ingredient you need. RecipeTips helps you avoid a trip to the store with a giant table of almost every common food item, and its best substitute.

Much like golden ratios can free you up in recipes, knowing some handy substitutes can let you try recipes you otherwise wouldn’t, too. For example, if a recipe calls for coconut milk, you can usually substitute it with whole milk or a mixture of cream of coconut and water. But if you didn’t know that, you’d just skip that delicious Thai Red Curry recipe and cook something else for dinner.

Apart from covering common ingredients, RecipeTips has also come up with a table for healthy substitutions, like evaporated skim milk instead of cream or turkey frankfurters instead of hot dogs.

To figure out your own alternatives, check out their guide to ingredient functions, which will help you understand what one of the common food items does, so you can make substitutions wisely.
